New Security Team
Please review the email from Ms. HaNoi regarding the new security team joining us.  As we are making a switch, please note that many of us have relied on security staff being able to recognize us as staff members … our new staff will not be able to do that.  So let’s have our badges visible as we walk on and off campus to help them (and avoid little conflicts that might arise).  As we are moving through the transition, please introduce yourselves as you come across them.

Future Planning for December
Please review End of Semester Logistics to see what is upcoming.  The document is located in the MS Divisional Meetings shared folder (so please do not move it … that would change the viewing settings).  Please add to the document if you think of things that impact our schedule.  Things for immediate attention:

MS Special Events:
December 1 – Hour of Code, Dec. 1 (in science; advisory too at some point)
December 2 – GIN Event (note date change)
December 5 – Drama production for ES, Dec. 5 (may have some rehearsal off timetable will confirm ASAP)
December 11 – Winter Concert rehearsal from 8-9:30; will require students in Grade 7 music, Grade 7/8 Choir to miss 1st block
December 12 – Winter Concert, Dec. 12
December 19 – Special schedule (Stacy, Stephen, Helen, Molly are planning committee)

Grading and Reports (please note, this is a slight change from my earlier estimated schedule):
December 10 (Wednesday) – 3:15-4:30 work time set aside for comments/grades
December 17 (Wednesday) – 3:15-4:30 work time set aside for peer comment review/corrections; (due at 8:00 AM on Dec. 18)
December 17 (Wednesday) – Deadline for grade entry and comment corrections
December 18 (Thursday) – Date for report card printing
December 19 (Friday) – Date for report card distribution

Very Mundane Issue:
Please do your own dishes in the faculty room.  Also, please return dishes to the cafeteria if that is where they came from (I was alerted by the Caterers that they are struggling to maintain dishes and utensils for use during the 3 lunches.  They bank on the fact that they have at least 1 clean set for MS – and wash ES dishes in preparation for HS.  They have been struggling with this because so many dishes are not making it back to them.)

Cool Instruction/Assessment Tip of the Week
An amazing opportunity is coming close by … Dr. Ron Ritchhart is hosting a seminar in Thailand on May 1-2.  It’s primary focus is to answer the question: Who are our students becoming as thinkers and learners as a result of their time with us?  Why is this exciting?  He is one of the authors of Making Thinking Visible and is a Senior Research Associate at Harvard Project Zero.  It’s a chance to learn directly from the expert!  Here is his bio:

Dr. Ron Ritchhart is a Senior Research Associate at Harvard Project Zero and Fellow at  the University of Melbourne, Australia. His current research focuses on developing intellectual character, making thinking visible, and enhancing school and classroom culture. Ron’s research and writings, particularly his theory of Intellectual Character and his framework for understanding group culture, have informed the work of schools, museums, and organizations throughout the world.

Ron’s widely acclaimed book, Making Thinking Visible, co-authored with Mark Church and Karin Morrison, has popularized the use of thinking routines worldwide. Ron currently directs the Worldwide Cultures of Thinking Project aimed at facilitating effective learning in classrooms, schools, and organizations. Bialik College in Melbourne Australia, Oakland County Schools in Michigan, and the International School of Amsterdam have been key partners in Ron’s research.
