Week Ahead: July 30 – Aug. 3

Welcome back!  Summer is a great time to refresh, relax, and reinvigorate.  And every 4 years, it’s a chance to cheer your head off for your favorite World Cup team.  As I rooted on teams who ultimately didn’t make it to the finals (sometimes not even out of the group stage), I couldn’t help but reflect on some of the broader messages of the World Cup.  One that really hit me as applicable to our work with middle school students is that to really reach for something extraordinary, to really push yourself beyond what you thought might be possible, you have to open yourself up to failure.  That’s not a small thing to ask of a person.  How do we help our students open themselves up to possible failure in the quest for something amazing?  How do we support them, encourage them, and celebrate them all along the way?  Fortunately, we have an amazing group of educators joining together to tackle this.  I can’t wait to see the stunning victories our students will have during the year.  I, for one, am ready to cheer my head off!
