Week Ahead: Feb. 25-Mar. 1

Congratulations on another successful and very fun Faculty Follies!  It takes a lot of work on the part of many, many people – and for such a great cause.

It was also a great weekend on the pitch.  Congratulations to our A teams as they brought home 4th place for the girls, and 1st place for the boys with a Cinderella story of moving from 6th place to Champions!

At the posting of this, I don’t have the final placings for MathCounts, but congratulations are also in order for our team who traveled to Shanghai for this regional competition.  We do know that one of our students, Jinwoo Park, made it into the Countdown round.  Can’t wait to hear how it all turns out.

Tricks for Surviving the Mid-Winter Teaching BluesDuring conversation at our last divisional meeting, someone wondered if it was possible to make big changes mid year.  I came across this article, and it provided some things to think about.  Written by a middle school teacher, it’s highly relatable.

Local EAL Training: ISHCMC-AA is offering PD workshops leading to certification in WIDA Climbs.  Even if you aren’t interested in being certified, this training is a great opportunity.  Here is the description provided by ISHCMC-AA.  If you sign up to attend, please note that this workshop will fulfill the PD requirement on April 20.

The WIDA Climbs course was developed in association with Center for Applied Linguistics.  It is designed to assist K-12 educators seeking to build their students’ academic language and literacy development in English. The course focuses on the strengths of English Language Learners (ELLs) and fosters professional collaboration amongst teachers.  The course will be delivered by Christina Nelson, the head of EAL at ISHCMC-AA.  Christina has been teaching language learners and collaborating with K-12 teachers for over 10 years.  She is an experienced conference presenter and teacher trainer.

Participants in the course will earn a certificate issued by WIDA.

Dates:  4 full day sessions à  March 16 & 31, April 6 & 20

Cost:  free for teachers from Cognita schools, $50 USD for teachers from other schools

Please contact Christina Nelson or Jenn Pratt to register before March 8th.
