Week Ahead: May 20-24
|The students we work with provide so many opportunities for us to laugh. This one came from a student who figured out how to solve his problem (forgetting his black shirt for the Art Party) and even remembered to return the shirt … and left a note that had me laughing out loud. Thanks for the advice Ryan 🙂
What a great week: Art Party and Show, ALLS Food and Supply Drive success, Paul Anderson and NGSS training, Gr 8 Film Festival, and a Gr 8 Transition activity. All fantastic displays of learning, growing, and celebrating. It also showcases the amount of team work that takes place on our campus. Amazing work everyone!

Final Weeks: It’s important to keep track of what happens as we close out the year both for students and teachers. This document is meant to assist with that. As you review it, please note any questions, additions, or changes needed. We will review it on Wednesday at our divisional meeting.
Climate Survey Open Until May 24 – From Catriona: Once a year, we open a community survey to students, parents, and teachers to gauge how well we are doing as a school, to celebrate our successes, and to elicit suggestions for improvement. We ask that all of you take a few minutes as a teacher to reflect on the whole school operations and to give us your professional feedback. The teacher survey can be found using this link Teacher survey. If you have a child enrolled here at SSIS, please fill out a parent survey as well and to have your voice heard both as a parent and a faculty member (this would have been emailed to you as a parent).
Final Alignment Meetings: Trying to keep up with all that happens at SSIS can be difficult. Here is what each department determined at their next steps:
Language Arts: Multiple lists created to explain what happens in specific areas across divisions. Desire to further document these agreements, move to assessments and rubrics to moderate, visit each others classes next year
Technology/STEM: Use of Common Sense Media; Desire to create philosophy
Social Studies: Balancing approach so not perceived as only Western; Desire to have common vocabulary, drawing from Language Arts too
Science: Developing assessments and full NGSS units across the school (fuller in ES, still integrated)
Mathematics: Philosophy statement developed, bring to ALT with discussion of implications
Modern World Language: Course Redesign for ABC & 123; Need two days to complete
Physical Education: Philosophy developed; desire to continue to align types of skills across divisions builds appropriate for physical literacy
Arts: Multiple agreements; recognizing the multiplying of events and issues with space, grappling with idea of converging events again; looking towards future facilities
Counseling: Use of ISCA to guide advisory “lessons” with understanding that all falls under Wellness Framework and possible changes as school “learns it”
Library: Aligning practices and understanding; awaiting research alignment
Learning Supporting: Sharing practices and aligning as appropriate; clarity and unity of storage
EAL: Interpretive Writing Rubric for now; norming needed to develop common language and rubric; clarity and unit of storage
