Week Ahead: Feb. 17-19

What a week! If my dad were here, I know he would share one of his favorite pearls of wisdom: Proper prior planning prevents poor performance. We knocked it out of the park this week! All of the work from the start of the year combined with the work you do everyday ensured that our switch to Virtual School would be successful. Thank you so much for every bit of it!

New addition – Mandatory survey: The Department of Education and Training (DOET) is requiring that EVERY faculty and staff member complete this health survey before arriving on campus Wednesday February 17. Also, don’t forget that you must submit the SSIS Travel Questionnaire if you traveled outside of Ho Chi Minh City during the Tet break. By law, we are required to provide this information to the Department of Education and Training (Directive 424) by February 17.

New addition – Course Selection Update: We will be sending out course selection information to rising grades 6, 7, and 8 on Thursday. As a follow up, we want advisors to check in with their advisees on Friday to ensure that they will all be submitted by Monday, Feb. 22 (by 8am).

New addition – Ensuring Zoom functions at its best: Zoom takes up a lot of … well, not sure the official term, but it takes a lot out of your computer to run it. So please ensure that you restart your computer each day and close out any unneeded tabs. This will help your computer manage the load better.

Student Tech Issues: Some are real, some might be a bit exaggerated.  If a student says they are having a tech issue, please immediately email Daniel and cc the child’s parents with the issue.  This will ensure efficient and timely resolution to the issue (or identification that it’s a non-issue).

Sample Email: It was great to see your child online this morning. I noticed that he/she had some difficulties with XXX (microphone, camera, etc) this morning. To be successful in Virtual School, it is critical that your child’s technology works properly. Please check with your child about this issue. If you need support, you can reach out to our tech coach Mr. Mendes today for support.
Please let me know if you have any additional question or concerns. I am eager to ensure that your child has a successful experience in Virtual School.
Sincerely,

Traveling:  Before any travel outside of Ho Chi Minh City, employees must complete the SSIS Travel Questionnaire. This information may be requested by the Vietnamese government at any time, particularly if contract tracing is needed for a confirmed case of COVID

Please make sure you read and understand the SSIS Travel Guidelines and Quarantine Implications. If you have any questions, please ask me at wfong@ssis.edu.vn or Dr. Moran at hos@ssis.edu.vn

Repeat Post – Peer Observations: The most common request coming from the Tripod reflection meetings is the desire to observe colleagues. This is an excellent way to learn from each other, from the collective experiences and talents of our team. Sometimes the work of the day gets in the way of our intention to observe our peers. One things I’ve reminded many is that even a visit of 10-15 minutes is valuable. You don’t have to give up an entire block to observe others. I’ll be helping support anyone wanting to do this! While some people might not mind drop ins, others appreciate a heads up that you’ll be visiting. So please just make a quick request to those that you want to stop in and see.

Repeat Post – Meeting with Students and the Office: In order for the office staff to perform the duties associated with our positions, there are times when we need to pull students from class. Sometimes we can wait until convenient. Other times we do not have that flexibility (either due to the circumstances or due to our own schedules). We can sometimes use recess, DEAR, Dragon Time or advisory … but many times that just isn’t enough time. We do try to balance when we pull our frequent fliers. However, if you see to have the same student pulled frequently from your class, please alert the office.

Repeat Post – Rejoined Association for Middle Level Education: We re-up-ed our membership in AMLE. I was going to post log in information on the blog – but realized that would violate the terms of membership …  so check the email … Some of the resources you can access include:
