Week Ahead: Nov. 1-5

When things happen in Vietnam – they really happen!  From a Thursday night swap from hospital vaccinations for students in grades 10-12 to an on campus vaccination Saturday for students in grades 6-12 (aged 12-17), the outcome was an amazing 361 vaccinations administered to our students.  It was a concrete example of the culture of care at SSIS showcased by every single SSIS employee, student, and parent who was involved.

[Oh – and Halloween was in there too!  This is just a part of the office team’s costume for the G6 Halloween showcase]

Upcoming (on the radar)

  • Nov. 5 – 22-23 Contracts due back to HR
  • Nov. 11 and 12 – non-student days [note, Nov. 10 remains Consolidation/Wellness Day]

Upcoming Non-Student Days:

Just a reminder that we will have 2 non-students days on Nov. 11 and 12.  Much of this time will be for ensuring your room is ready for when we are allowed to have students on campus.  Other time will be spent working through concurrent learning plans.

Status of Counselor:

I’m pleased to announce that Sue will be staying with us part-time for the remainder of the school year supporting our students and family social emotional needs.  Her hours will continue to be 12-4 (Vietnam time).  We are so fortunate to have her support.

Daily Learning Plan:

As we head into Q2, I want to share appreciations and congratulations for shifting to Schoology with such grace and determination.  There are so many things that you have collectively and individually figured out to ensure the students experience is of such high quality.  I do have just a few reminders to us all of required elements in the daily learning plan posted to Schoology.  You can review the full expectations in the MS Virtual School Guide for Teachers (pgs 4 and 5)

  • Expected time must be included for all components of the daily plan.  This helps students better understand how they are progressing in the expected time; it helps teachers to gauge whether they are correctly estimating how much time things are truly taking students (provided you ask 🙂 students for feedback).
  • If the due date/time is NOT the end of class, we use 9pm and from assignment to due date should be 48 hours (basically if assigned on Monday, due Weds at 9pm; Tuesday, due Thursday, 9pm).

From RAR: Advisory –

  • Our Positive Relationships advisory unit will run two more weeks.
  • Our next unit, Taking Care of Ourselves, begins the week of Nov. 15th and will run through the end of the semester. Topics will vary by grade level but will all include, stress management, positive emotions and emotional literacy. Our Wednesday assemblies and upcoming David Bott PD will support students in learning this information and teachers in supporting students. For more info, see the MS Advisory Scope and Sequence
  • This coming Wednesday, from 10AM-12PM , we are asking for 3-4 advisors in each grade level to help adapt last year’s Taking Care of Ourselves lessons for Virtual School and 3-4 different advisors to cover their Wednesday advisor classes. Many hands make for light work : ). More details will follow Monday by email.
  • Several members of Stuco, on their own accord, are working to create advisory experiences for the week of Nov. 8 that bring together their learning on character strengths and positive relationships. Be on the look out for this!

MS Yearbook:

Though we do not have a yearbook class this year (we are working on that for next year), we are still going to produce a yearbook (still working on that plan).  In preparation for that, I am hoping that you can drop a few photos from this quarter into this Yearbook Folder.  Create an internal folder labeled with this naming convention: Teacher, Courses, Q1.  We will need to be creative … so I’d love to have  anything you think might be usable.
