Week Ahead: May 23-27

What a great kick off to the exciting end of year events – from StuCo Elections, to a faculty performance during lunch, and ending the week with our own budding theatrical dancers – the G7 PE Dance Celebration – it was incredible!  Congratulations to the entire PE department – Sean Boyes, Bryan Hien, Deb Jones, Kelley McKenna, Sanny Tran, and Adele VanDeVenter – and our talented media and tech team – Daniel Mendes, Mr. Tung,  and Mr. Thanh – for a spectacular showcase.  Though we all couldn’t attend, the PE team will be sharing the video links shortly – you won’t be disappointed!

May 25 – Senior Walk Through:

We are very pleased to announce that we will be continuing the tradition of the Senior Walk Through on Wednesday, May 25.   This is where high school seniors walk the halls of all three divisions, in cap and gown, and are applauded by students and staff as they proceed.  They will be in the MS about 1:40-1:45.  They will enter on the ground floor and make their way to the 4th floor before heading to the ES.  We fill the halls, clapping and cheering them as they walk along.  It means a great deal to the seniors, and it is a wonderful tradition.  Be sure to grab a tissue if sweet, emotional events get you teary.

Tech Email from D Perkins – and upcoming check out tasks:

The end of the year brings close out tasks.  Please see the email from David P regarding tech related close out tasks.  This email includes information about iPad carts (last day of use is June 7); tech checked out to teachers like laptop, remotes, iPads (returning and/or keeping for the summer, June 10); and backing up your Google My Drive.  You will also receive a check out list for other departments like HR, the business office, and the division itself.  This will come from Thao.  Please be sure to ask for assistance at any point along the way.

Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious:

The following links to a particularly well-executed study that presents clear and convincing results.  Most times, these studies are based on large, existing datasets that can include many variables.
This new paper avoids these issues by deploying a gold standard for studying human impacts: the randomized control trial. The researchers gathered 154 volunteers with a mean age of 29.6 years old. They randomly divided them into an intervention group, which was asked to stop using social media for one week (with a focus, in particular, on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok). A control group was given no instructions.

At the end of this week, the researchers found “significant between-group differences” in well-being, depression, and anxiety, with the intervention group faring much better on all three metrics. These results held even after control for baseline scores and age and gender.

Google Doc Feature: Smart Chips:

I wanted to share a new feature called Smart Chips. I created a 45-second tutorial for you. It helps identify the name of the Google Suite of products. This feature will not work with outside links.
