Weekly Update: May 19 – 26

Hi Everyone,

This Saturday night is the HS Prom at the Reverie Hotel.  A special thank you to Sophie and her team for organizing this exciting event for our students.

Please have your exams to the photocopier room by Wednesday.  Also please try to have your report card comments ready in the S2 bin.

The HS Commencement Ceremony will be on Saturday, May 27th at the GEM Center downtown.  The ceremony begins at 4:00pm.  Seats have been reserved for faculty who want to process into the room in order of longevity at SSIS (I think William Medina will be leading this parade.)

Let’s finish the year well!

The seniors have chosen a prank that they would like us to participate in.  On Monday, May 22 the class of 2017 will be moving all of the picnic tables from the kiosk area and replacing them with beach blankets, towels and other beach items.  The class would like your support in two areas:
  • Keep this info secret from the grade 9-11 students
  • Wear your beach gear to school on Monday (shorts, flip flops, hats, etc)

Let’s all join in on the fun with them.  Sorry, no Speedos are allowed for staff.

Project X– On our early release PD day on May 19th we will be learning about Project X and inquiry based learning.  Next year all students at SSIS from grades 2-9 will be participating in a week long open inquiry project between winter and Tet breaks.  Teachers from all divisions of the school will be supporting our students during the week for short segments of time.  A lot more info will come on May 19.  Please note that this project will not take HS teachers away from their AP and IB classes during that week.

StuCo Election Assembly– It’s almost election time.  StuCo will be hosting it’s elections on Tuesday, May 23 at the end of the day.  After the last block of the day, students will walk down to the auditorium for election speeches.  The special schedule of the day is here.  Shortly after the speeches, students will have the opportunity to vote electronically.  See William Medina or Chris Wolf if you have any questions.

Comments for Seniors– Since we just completed comments for Q3 for the seniors for the few weeks you’ve had before their departure at the end of April, you need not write comments for every senior.  The only students you are required to write comments for are for those students that dropped more than 10% (one grade level) from their Q3 marks.

Master Schedule and Advisory for 2017-18– The master schedule is almost complete.  A special thanks to the department heads, David and Nghi (ICT), Robert, Chris and Erin (Counseling) and Tim for finding creative solutions to the issues that arose along the journey.  The master schedule is 99% finished at this point.  Additionally, you can see the advisory grade level teams for next year.  Grade 9 and 10 teams will stay in place for the most point to ensure continuity in regards to our WWW trips.  Most grade 11 advisory teachers will continue with their same students during their grade 12 year to continue building relationships through graduation.  A few grade 11 and 12 advisors remain on the same grade level to refine the advisory curriculum for the 2017-18 school year.
