Weekly Update: April 26 – May 10
|
Please enjoy your long weekend. Â The last few weeks of school will be very busy with IBDp exams, AP exams, final assessments, Prom, Commencement, report card comments, and Semester Two exams.
Unfortunately, the Go Green Day event that was scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled (hopefully just postponed) due the hot weather and high UV index that HCMC is presently experiencing. Â The ES Sports Day that was scheduled for tomorrow has also been postponed.
Please let Jacob or I know if you have any questions or concerns.

On the Horizon
- Last Day for AP/IB Courses Students, May 17
-
May 24th Group 4 Project. 11th grade students will not be in classes
- Prom, May 25
- Graduation, June 1 at 4pm
-
The group 4 project is an interdisciplinary activity for all science students in grade 11. It is a collaborative venture where the emphasis is on interdisciplinary cooperation rather than the product of the project. Students will work in assigned teams to analyze a common topic. This year’s topic is photography. The expectations for each student is:
- Interdisciplinary collaboration
- Development of teamwork
- Development of planning skills
- Exchange or sharing of data collected or issues raised
- Students’ best effort on May 13th and May 24th
On Monday, May 13th, students will be given time to meet their team and think about how they can use photography and the different sciences they each represent to address a global issue involved in science and technology. On Friday, May 24th, all 11th grade students will have the full day to implement their plan. Eleventh grade students will not go to the normal classes that day. At 3:00 they will share their work with the HS students as they leave for the weekend. They will have a variety of options for how to present their work depending on the nature of their project. This project is required for all IB science students, and attendance at these two sessions is mandatory for completion of the IB diploma or science certificate. It is very important that students arrive on time and are in school on these two dates. - Finalize your semester exams. Printed exams are due to Huyen in the main office by 3pm on Friday, May 24.
Staff Action Needed
- 2018-19 Semester Two Exam Schedule. Â Please let Tim know if I have missed your class or your students will not be writing in the HS Gymnasium. Â I will send a lit of proctors out closer to the exam date.
- If you will be away for any reason that requires a substitute teacher then please submit your request on the HR Portal even if it’s for School Business. Â Huyen needs time (preferably at least 5 days) to find substitute teachers and HR needs to align the sub’s pay with the SSIS teacher’s request.
- Review the end of year information sheet for Seniors
- Read the IB/AP and Matrix sections of the Dragon’s Lair
- Nominate a colleague for great work via Kudos
Doors to Communication Are Always Open– Just a reminder that Tim and my doors are always open to chat about anything you have questions or concerns about. This is especially important as we finish the year with a larger cohort of new faculty. Your heads of department are also an avenue for asking questions or sharing concerns with the high school leadership team or with Tim and I individually. We are in the home stretch of the year and so much happens in such a short amount of time.
