IB/AP IB Updates at SSIS

September is upon us!

First of all, I want to say thank you to all the IB teachers who have been working so hard for all of our students at SSIS. Although there is still much more to do, we are all on the same boat rowing in the same direction. I feel that so much has already been accomplished, and that it is important for teachers to realize this when looking out seeing so much more left to do.

One immediate matter to make you aware of, the IB HL Hours Committee (Focus Group) Google form has been sent to your email. The next three Mondays (and more if need be) in Room C-322 from 4:00Pm to 5:00PM will be dedicated to meeting to discuss possible solutions in finding additional HL hours in the short-term and also looking long-term into 2017-2019. If you have ideas and have worked out the logistics of how to possibly make your ideas work, please sign up with your name on the days that you will be able to attend. I realize that ASAs are going on as well as other commitments. But, if you are able to attend all three sessions, please do so. Again, check your email for the Google form.

The other immediate matter to be aware of is the new SSIS policy on collecting and reporting IB predicted grades. Students will have until September 23rd to complete a self-predicted grade form with justifications for their self-predicted grade score and the universities/programs that they wish to attend that may need that score. They are to talk to each of their IB teachers about their self-predicted grade and justifications and also university plans/expectations. The conversation need only take 5-10 minutes. When completed, teachers are to sign the section indicating that they had a conversation with the IB student. IB teachers are not required to tell the student what his or her predicted grade is. However, if an IB teacher wishes to tell a student, then the teacher is free to do so. Students are to complete this process and return all their form to Ms. Hang in the Guidance Office by September 23rd.

The final immediate matter regards IB teachers submitting predicted grades to the IB Coordinator by October 6th. I will be having a simple form created for teachers to easily input predicted grades to submit to me. I will then conference with each IB student about his or her predicted grade in each class. They will then make decisions about university with their respective guidance counselor. Predicted grades are subject to change between October and December based on a student’s performance. Students need to know where they stand in a particular class regardless of university admission requirements.

Letters explaining the new SSIS predicted grade process have gone out to all Grade 12 student (IB and non-IB) guardians so that everyone in the community knows about and understands the new policy. Teachers have also been emailed this new policy as well.

Please do enjoy a well needed and well deserved holiday weekend.
