The New iPads Are Rad (and How to Book Them)

The high school now has 50 new iPads available for check out (two carts with 25 iPads in each cart). These are new iPad 4s that have 128 GB of RAM, a faster processor, and better camera. Unlike the previous iPads, AirDrop works on these iPads, so it will be much easier to move content between laptop and iPad. The battery lasts a long time, also. Overall, they are a massive improvement from the previous iPads we had last year.

I wrote this post last year about how some teachers used the older iPads. Those types of uses are still relevant and even better with the new iPads. The processes will be much more efficient and fast with the new iPads. There are some other apps on these iPads now that allow for more creation of content.

Here are the apps that are currently on the iPads.

If you know of an app you’d like to use, but is not on here, let me know. It will be well worth the look to see how the iPads can integrated with your lessons. I think they will bring a new level of engagement and ability for students to create content in your courses that couldn’t be done otherwise. You are also welcome to check out an iPad to see what it can do for you.

To book the iPads, you need to do a process within Google Calendar. This is important so others know if they are available or not. Try to book the iPads as soon as you decide to use them. The tutorial below will show how to do this.

The two carts are organized like this. If you need a class set of iPads (one for each student) and you have 13+ students in your class, check out Cart A. This Cart will be moved around intact for larger classes. If you only need 1-12 iPads, check out iPads from Cart B, pull out the iPads from the checked out slots, and carry them to your room.. For example, if students will work in pairs or small groups with one iPad or your class is small, Cart B is the cart from which to check out. The calendars for Cart B are organized in increments of six for this purpose. The above video will show this.

The two carts are currently stored in my office in C400.

If you will be using the iPads often, it will be beneficial to have the iPad cart calendars added to your “Other Calendars” section of your Calendar. This will allow to see quickly whether or not the iPads are available when you would like to book them.  The tutorial below will show you how to add these calendars.

If you would like to chat with me individually, as a teaching team, or as a department about how you can use the iPads, don’t hesitate to contact me.
