Weekly Update: January 16-20

Happy New Year!

Tim and I hope you had a fantastic winter break and were able to recharge your engines for the short ride between now and Tet.  Thank you for a great HS faculty meeting this week.  I was so impressed by the high level of engagement and academic discourse in each of your assessment groups.  I am eager to see the culmination of your work.

Have a great weekend,

Jacob

Tripod Survey Reflection Meetings– Tim and I have started our Tripod reflection meetings this week.  Please review your results before the meeting and be ready to discuss areas to celebrate and areas to consider for further growth or investigation.  These will be the two main questions we will discuss during our time together.  Here is the summary of the HS results to use as a comparison with your colleagues.

Sunshine Update: Karaoke Event January 20 and Tet Collection  We are hosting a karaoke event next Friday, January 20th starting at 4:30. If you are interested in joining us, please add your name to this list by next Wednesday and let us know if your spouse or partner will be joining you.

Tet is almost here. For those of you that are new, this is the biggest holiday of the year in Vietnamese culture. The customary gift is cash (new bills are considered good luck as it is the new year). The Sunshine Committee collects money for all of our hardworking cleaners and maintenance folks and distributes it at an event held in the Teacher’s Lounge prior to Tet Break. The suggested donation is 500,000 VND. Please drop off your donation to any Sunshine Committee member (Evan, William, Nathan, or Bilal).

Tet Assembly (Jan 24) and Tet Attendance Impact– We have our annual Tet assembly coming on Tuesday January 24.  This is our biggest and most important one of the year and takes up a majority of the afternoon.  You can see the schedule here, so plan accordingly as classes are about 50 minutes in length.  As many of you know, Tet is the most important holiday in Vietnam.  Families travel to their hometowns across Vietnam to be with their relatives.  While Tet Eve is January 27, please be aware that many of our Vietnamese families may leave early on the 24th, 25th or 26th to arrive in their hometowns before Tet Eve.  Keep this in mind when you are planning your activities for the last week of school before Tet break.

Assessment Policy Groups– Make sure to review the documents in your assessment group’s folder from your chosen group.  There are an assortment of articles and policies in each folder.  Please make sure to read these by the January 25th HS Faculty meeting.

Assessment Calendar– Please check out and use the new assessment calendar that is on the white board in the HS faculty room.  The purpose of the calendar is for the staff to be able to visually see where the pressure points are for students over the course of the given year.  This is only for major summative assessments that would significantly impact the grade book like tests, projects, presentations, etc.
Vietnam Tech Conference– The next tech conference we host is just around the corner after Tet.  It’s a great conference that brings together teachers from all over Vietnam and SE Asia.  Please consider attending the VTC.  It’s here and only $100.  You can access the PD form here.
ELLSA Conference– The English Language Learning Specialists in Asia Conference is coming to SSIS on April 22-23.  The theme of the conference is: English Proficiency: Moving Beyond the Plateau with a focus on Academic Language, Fossilized Errors and Assessment. Early Bird registration has been extended to Dec. 16; cost $230 (and as always SSIS PD funds can be used for this conference).  If you have questions or are interested please contact Melissa Martin or Stacy Crowell for more information.
