Weekly Update March 10 – 17th

Hi Everyone,

A few decisions were made this week by the HS Leadership Team. First, we will not have any December 2017 exams in the gymnasium.  We are looking at ways to allow each Block additional time to have a longer in-class assessment.  This may be having the first block each day for 2 hours with a shorter Block 2 class.

National Honors Society
NHS Co-Advisor Needed 2017-18- We are looking for someone to help co-lead the National Honor Society next year.  Please email Jacob or Tim if you are interested in learning more about and/or working with an exception group of our students.

Quarter 3 Report Cards

  • Start writing your quarter 3 comments, so they are ready for peer review on March 17
  • Communicate with parents about students receiving D’s or F’s in preparation for PTC’s

June Exam Schedule
Please review the proposed June Exam Schedule and let me know of problems.  We will use both the HS Gym and the MPR to write the exams so that we can get the majority done before the weekend.

Extended Essay Supervisors Needed
Please sign up to be an IBDP EE Supervisor.  If every HS teacher supervises 1 – 2 students each then all our IBDP students will be well cared for.  EE Supervisor Training is available.

Save the Date, April 15 Sunshine Service Trip and Brewery Tour– The Sunshine Committee is organizing an awesome event on April 15.  The event will start around 10am with a service trip to a local orphanage ending around noon.  After spending a couple hours helping kids in need, we will head to district 1 for a brewery tour.  The bus will return to Phu My Hung around 5pm.  You are welcome to stay downtown or head back on the bus.  Significant others are also invited to attend.  Transportation by bus will be provided.  You can attend both or either of these events.  More info and signups to follow, but save the date on your calendars.

Coverage of Classes for WASC Visit

Upcoming Fine Arts Events
1. Music Piano Fest   15 March @7pm
2. Exhibition: Art 2. GF High school building, start on Monday.

Parent/Teacher Conferences– PTC’s are around the corner.  They will be held on Thursday, March 23 (5-8pm) and Friday, March 24 (8am-1pm).  We will be doing “Arena” style conferences in the High School Gym.  The MS will be using their gym during this time for hands on activities.  Grades will be published after the conferences, so we recommend that you email the parents of students receiving D’s and/or F’s.  This would be a great opportunity to make a personal connection with the parents of these at risk students.

New HS Absence Notification Forms–  Just a reminder that we are piloting a new procedure to notify teachers of planned absences for school related functions (MRISA, field trips, MUN, etc).  Instead of coaches giving students one form for students to take around to teachers to sign, they will instead be given smaller slips of paper that will notify teachers of absences (example below).  Tim and I will put events like MUN, MRISA and other trips with a large number of students on our Dragon’s Lair calendar to remind you as well.  These slips are designed to initiate a conversation between the teacher and student about making up work.  We will still use the older form for things like college visits, deaths of family members, and other family events.

Family Fun Day– PTA’s second Family Fun Day of the year takes place on Saturday, March 11 from 2:30-5:30pm.  Please come out and support our parents and community during a portion of the event.
