64. Coronavirus Update: Travel Guidelines, September 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff,

Good morning, everyone. As we approach the Fall break, I want to clarify the school’s travel guidelines, as I know, many of you will want to make plans. First, I want to emphasize that SSIS is not imposing domestic travel restrictions. We follow the guidelines of the Vietnamese government who currently have no domestic travel restrictions in place.

With that said, however, we do know from our Danang experience that, although Vietnam has made extraordinary efforts in limiting the spread of COVID-19, we are by no means invincible. Self-quarantine and mandatory COVID testing can come about just as suddenly again.

That is why, in the updated travel guidelines, we have detailed various scenarios so that you will understand under what circumstances and how the school plans to support you should this happen again.

Vietnam has not issued any guidelines on international travel at this time, other than what is reported in the media about potential routes opening up, particularly in Asia. So, we are unable to provide information on international travel to and from Vietnam during the winter holiday or the summer months at this time. But, of course we will revisit this important matter as soon as further details are announced.

I am mindful that as an international community, we greatly value travel, new experiences, and connecting with family and friends. And as a school and employer, we will do our utmost to support you in these endeavors, whenever possible. However, we recognize that our key priority, and joint mission, is to nurture each student’s intellectual and personal development in preparation for a purposeful life as a global citizen. That requires that we keep our students and ourselves safe and healthy and available to do our jobs.

I am very grateful to the faculty and staff members who reviewed these guidelines and provided feedback. Please read these travel guidelines carefully, and do not hesitate to share any questions and concerns with WaiMun or with me.

I hope you have a healthy and rewarding year. And, when you travel, I hope you have fun, adventure, make great memories, and return safely and in good health.

All good wishes,
Catriona
